Other benefits and help if you get Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance
This advice applies to Scotland. See advice for See advice for England, See advice for Northern Ireland, See advice for Wales
If you get Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (DLA), you might be able to get:
a higher rate of your existing benefits
benefits for your carer
money off your council tax
help with travel
grants and other help.
Scottish Adult DLA is not treated as income for other benefits, and you do not pay tax on it. You can use your Scottish Adult DLA award letter to apply for other help. If you do not have proof of the award, the other benefit provider can contact Social Security Scotland to confirm that you're getting Scottish Adult DLA.
Benefit top-ups
If you get Scottish Adult DLA, you might get a top-up - called a premium - on the following benefits:
Housing Benefit
income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
Income Support
Working Tax Credit
income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Pension Credit.
Getting Scottish Adult DLA will not reduce your other benefits. You should tell whoever pays your other benefits that you’re getting Scottish Adult DLA, so they can check you’re getting the right amount of the other benefits. Get help from an adviser to find out what benefits you're entitled to and how to apply for them.
Benefits for your carer
If someone cares for you regularly, they might be able to get Carer Support Payment or Young Carer Grant.
Read more about Carer Support Payment and Young Carer Grant.
Council tax discounts
If you get the care component or the mobility component of Scottish Adult DLA, you might get money off your council tax bill. It's hard to say exactly how much you'll get off your bill because it depends on the components and rates of Scottish Adult DLA you're getting. Your council will be able to tell you.
How to apply
To get your discount, contact your local council and tell them you get Scottish Adult DLA. You might need to send them a copy of your Scottish Adult DLA award letter. Find your local council on mygov.scot.
