Fuel poor cannot afford to Government to ‘drag out’ fuel poverty plans any longer

As the Environmental Audit Committee publishes its report on energy subsidies Citizens Advice emphasises the urgent need for Government to take action on fuel poverty.

Citizens Advice Chief Executive Gillian Guy said:

“Price hikes by energy firms and the Government’s failure to act on fuel poverty has left many people living in perilously cold conditions because they cannot afford to heat their home. For some households, they have reached the point where there is nothing more they can do to cut their bills, the cost of heating their home and keeping the lights on is completely out of reach.

“Piecemeal policies that only address short-term issues will not stave off the threat of a future where more and more households face the difficult choice between heating and eating. The Government cannot afford to drag out its fuel poverty strategy any longer and must publish its plans as soon as possible so it can start to help those who are in severe difficulties.

“The energy market is in desperate need of reform to make it transparent and ensure people are put before profits. The Government can help people on low incomes now by shifting the cost of ECO and Warm Homes Discount from bills into taxation and making sure the fuel poor actually get the help available.”
